retro encabulator redux

I have gotten an abnormal amount of traffic from google searches on the "retro encabulator" mentioned in this post, which is odd considering I am 36th in google results.

It's still a hilarious video (which I have nothing to do with and assume ebaumsworld should get all the credit for releasing it on the net) but the interesting thing is that I've been getting hits from rockwellcollins.com proxies so if there's anyone who works at Rockwell who knows anything about this video, please share the story. I think everyone knows that it's an old engineering joke by now but who made the video? Who is the news anchor looking guy who stars in it? Did Rockwell know it was being done or was it done on the side? More importantly, are there others like this? C'mon, someone knows the story. Cough it up.

You. Yes you, sitting there working for Rockwell. Instead of surfing the internet you could be contributing knowledge to the world. It's been an inspiration to me already for my need for preframulated amulite has been noted by my boss.

Collateral Sucks

I saw Collateral last night and nearly fell asleep during this trite cliche of an action movie. I wrote a long review with links to the movie site and IMDB, screenshots, and lots of stuff that for once may have sounded like a professional caliber movie review.

Then my browser crashed right before I published the review. Firefox is normally extremely stable but I guess it just couldn't take anymore of me talking about this stupid movie and offed itself.

I'm really mad because that really sucked, but it sucked nowhere near as much as did Collateral.

CocoRosie - By Your Side

UPDATE: I forgot to put the customary Amazon link so you can all go out and buy their wonderful music just like I just did.

Today's sad song is another by Cocorosie called By Your Side. Ok, I admit it, over the course of less than 24 hours I've become totally captivated by these girls' voice. Yeah that should be "voices" but they blend together in such a complimentary way that you may as well call it one voice, even when one is singing background in a different pitch.

At any rate, they sound so completely angelic. Not the kind of perfect angels that people say inhabit Heaven but the kind you'd really like to see, sort of dark and twisted angels taking up the back booth in a smoky cocktail lounge. A little cynical maybe, and a whole lotta sad, but altogether perfect in their own way.

They're sort of the dark twisted version of Joanna Newsom for all of us Newsom fans that can't really cope with too much of that positive innocence.

P.S. I'm getting these lyrics fromAlwaysOnTheRun.net which I've found to be an invaluable lyrics source.

CocoRosie-By Your Side.mp3

I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I just wanted to be your housewife
All i wanted was to be your housewife
I'll iron your clothes
I'll shine your shoes
I'll make your bed
And cook your food
I'll never cheat
I'll be the best girl you'll ever meet
And for a diamond ring
I'll do these kinds of things
I'll scrub your floor
Never be a bore
I'll tuck you in
I do not snore
I'd wear your black eyes
Bake you apple pies
I don't ask why
And i trys not to crys
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
I'll always be by your side
Even when you're down and out
And its nearly midnight
And all i want with my life
Is to be a housewife
Is to be a housewife
'Cause it's nearly midnight
And all i want with my life
Is to die a housewife
Is to die a housewife

Good Friday

Today's sad song is Good Friday by Cocorosie. Another beautiful song by two beautiful girls.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Well, one beautiful girl and one with a mustache. I likes my wimmins sans mustachio, k-plz-thx.

I just ran across them at Epitonic, and they're deffinately a different breed, as you may well have noted.

Comprised of two sisters, Bianca and Sierra Cassady, Cocorosie delivers a, as Epitonic so aptly put it, "distinctive brand of ethereal folk futurism." Yeah I think that sums it up pretty well.

Although it is short on lyrics, this is really quite a beautiful song. They whisper their nostalgic memory of falling in love, over and over. Sad and nostalgic, dark and beautiful, narcotic and etheral. Just beautiful.

CocoRosie - Good Friday.mp3

I once fell in love with you
Just because the sky turned from gray into blue
It was a good friday
The streets were open and empty
No more passion play
On st. Nicholas avenue
I believe in st. Nicholas
It's a different type of santa clause

Be My Useless Husband

No not you. I mean I like you and all but I'm just not that kinda guy. Now a useless wife on the other hand, that I could use.

Be My Useless Husband is Empire State Human's newest mashup of Nina Simone's Be My Husband and Depeche Mode's Useless and it sounds great. This is a must listen!

You can find it at Spoilt Victorian Child's music blog but be sure to check out more of the SVC's great tunes at Empire State Human (SVC and ESH are one and the same).

Best gunfight ever

This video clip (10 Meg .avi) from the movie Equilibrium is the best gunfight I have ever witnessed in a movie. It's sort of a blend of martial arts and pistols at close range. Enjoy.

The rest of the movie is pretty ok too, sort of a cross between 1984 and the Matrix.

Just gotta get this off my chest

I think Al Franken had it right years ago when he wrote a book called Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot. Now, I dunno about Franken, he's probably an idiot too. I very rarely listen to Rush but I've noticed something odd about his modus operandi.

It goes like this: He gets a caller who poses some sort of question then spends five minutes poking and probing around with the caller to get more information and maybe argue a little bit, but only a little bit. Then all of a sudden he shuts the caller off so they can't argue and goes into a tirade that generally has little to do with the question the caller posed in the first place. But it's always a long well spoken tirade, it's the only think anyone remembers of the argument, even if it's devoid of any intellectual merit and has nothing to do with the argument to begin with.

It's quite obvious that Rush's sole job with the caller is to gather information for whoever is in the background writing the tirade for him to read when he cuts the caller off.

There I said it. Rush Limbaugh is not arguing with liberals with half his brain tied behind his back. He is only the front man for a team of writers. Rush is a fat stupid hypocrite of a windbag, and I don't say it because I disagree with him but because, like Ann Coulter, he feeds off hate, and if people would stop believing he is a genius they would realize how he operates. The problem is that no one wants to use their brains long enough to see through idiots like these.

Kill Bill Volume II

I watched Kill Bill Volume 2 last night and, well, it's more or less almost exactly what you'd expect. Uma is dirty, degraded, bloody, beaten, shot, kicked, and tortured in as many ways possible as she snuffs out the bad guys. That poor girl, is there any actress who has ever been treated this way through two movies? Is this part of her repayment to society for that whole shoplifting thing?

This is her before getting to the first fight scene which is 9 minutes later and 74 minutes into the movie...

This movie fills you in on all the backstory, and ironically, it's really a love story. Kinda interesting. Those international killer types, what happens when their relationship is on the rocks? Well, we now know thanks to Quentin Tarantino.

My one major critique of this movie is this: doesn't the "five point palm exploding heart technique" sounds like an euphemism for masturbation?

Keep On Runnin'

Today's sad song is Keep on Runnin' by Cat Power.

"Cat Power" is Chan Marshall, another beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.

I have heard only one song by Cat Power (Metal Heart, it's great) but noticed this post today on Metafilter pointing people to KVRX which is a student radio station in Austin Texas. They have tons of in-studio recordings but the only ones I have checked out so far are the songs by Cat Power ( <----- this is where the mp3 is at).

Though all four of those songs are great, the song I am blogging here is the first song on the list. They call it "unknown cover", but a lyrics search says it is "Keep On Runnin' by Cat power" and I can't find if it is a cover or not.

But like I said the other songs are just as good, for example Naked If I Want To, which poses a question that, personally, I would be honored to be asked.

Cat Power: "Would you let me walk down the street naked if I wanted to?"

Me: "Please!"

Keep On Runnin'

When will you do what you say you’ll do?
How could you really do it?
Will you keep on running?
Baby settle down
Will you keep on running?
You’ll lose your heart
Will you keep on running?
Baby settle down
Will you keep on running?
Run on, run on. You’ll rule your day.

Begin to crawl on baby with the cracks were very high
Just keep on crawlin till the day I die

When will you do what you say you’ll do?
How could you really do it?
Will you keep on running?
Baby settle down
Will you keep on running?
You’ll lose your heart
Will you keep on running?
Baby settle down
Will you keep on running?
Run on, run on and you’ll rule your day

Samurai Fiction

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It seems that I enjoy a great deal of movies that I don't consider to be very good. I have blogged here about Spartan and The Chronicles of Riddick, neither of which I considered to be good movies, but both of which I enjoyed quite a bit. And now I am blogging Samurai Fiction, a sort of post-modern approach to old samurai flicks, which I picked up at the video store because it looked "artsy."

Most people probably like martial arts movies because they "kick ass," but I like them for their grace and attitude. They usually touch on life and death, and contain a bit of wisdom and humor as well, plus a master swordfighter or martial artist practicing the art is a graceful sight indeed and that in itself is fun to behold.

This movie looked like it may do all that well. Unfortunately, it does not. The story and the swordfighting are both fairly poor, but the cinematography has moments of sheer beauty. It figures, the movie was directed by music video director Nakano Hiroyuki. Music video directors know how to make nice shots but they aren't known for their storytelling abilites. Maybe it is different in Japan, but whatever, the movie itself is still not that great.

But damn if it isn't pretty...

And therein lies my conflict for I am still recommending the film, especially to anyone who likes black and white Japanese flicks. Fans of Kurosawa might like it, for example. Personally, I don't know what it is but the Japanese always look so beautiful and graceful in movies and that is captured well by this movie. Put that in front of black and white beaches, mountains and streams and you have a very well shot movie indeed.
